  • I recently purchased the 3D upgrade for my Zen Toolworks 12×12 CNC machine. It’s a nice upgrade that increases the Z-axis travel to about 5 inches from 2 inches. It allows me to work on larger objects as well as having more room for vises, clamps, and other tooling. However, I knew that the rigidity of the 3D upgrade was likely to be poor since the standard model wasn’t the most rigid machine either. The 3D upgrade is mostly designed for using the machine as a 3D printer, so rigidity was spared in this upgrade. I purchased aluminum L-angles and plates to reinforce the CNC machine and installed the reinforcements as I was building the CNC machine.

    There are some weak points in the design of the CNC machine (other than the fact it’s made out of PVC). The walls on the base of the machine where the gantry attaches is thin and can flex. I reinforced this area with L-shaped pieces of aluminum. Also, the guide rods can flex, and this problem is greatly amplified by both having the longer guide rods in the 12×12 model and the larger Z-axis assembly in the 3D model. I minimized the guide rod flex by reinforcing the back of the gantry and then using PVC blocks attached to the Z-axis assembly which make contact with the back of the gantry. The PVC blocks and their contact points are covered in teflon tape to reduce friction. I also reinforced the sides of the gantry for added rigidity.

    Even after all these reinforcements, the spindle still moves a little, but it’s much better than it would have been and it’s at least as good as the standard model with the lower gantry.

    The 3D upgrade kit does not come with any means to lower the spindle since it was designed for use as a 3D printer. I made my own spindle extension using aluminum angles and an aluminum plate for additional support on the back. It also did not come with a holding nut that holds the F8 Z-axis lead screw in place. I had to request this part separately since I have an older model CNC machine that uses a tight fit in the bearings to hold the lead screw in place.

    I also purchased a 4-axis TB6560 based stepper motor control board from ebay which was manufactured in China. The particular board I purchased is notorious for having problems. However, it is a popular board and there are fixes for it. I bypassed all the optoisolators on the board to improve signal integrity and response time, as well as disconnecting the current limiting circuit. I also had a bad TB6560 chip on the board that I had to replace.
